Reflected

This God is our God for ever and ever,
and shall be our guide for evermore.
Psalm 48:13

I see the sliver of the moon shining in the dark winter night. And when I look closer, I can see the orb itself and know the light on its surface it not its own but comes from the sun. How old was I when I learned the moon was not a flat disk in the sky shining down on me? Once I knew it was a sphere, I could see it.

Sometimes we have to know what something is before we can see it and name it. Now, I know that the light cast by the moon is actually a reflection of the sun’s light, as if the moon were a mirror re-directing brightness across multiple millions of miles.

Even though it does not generate its own light, a full moon can make the nighttime forest as bright as the day and be a guiding light. In the same way, people reflect the light of Christ. Although we are not the ones who called light into being, that divine brightness can shine out from our souls and bring new sight to the world. How wonderful is God to give us this gift and invite us to guide others into the holy.
