Put your trust in י ה ו ה and do good;
dwell in the land and feed on its riches.
Psalm 37:3
The African violets need to be repotted. I know this because they keep tipping over, top heavy in their too-small containers. I adopted the four of them by accident two Advents ago. They were small, sad, and scraggly. Now, they happily inhabit the front windowsill, robust and blooming.
I am daunted by the repotting task. What will happen if I disturb them? What if they don’t thrive after the transition? And, I remind myself, what will happen if I don’t give them more space to grow?
So many things can be limited by too-small containers. Advent lures me into the expanse, that liminal and unlimited space of the holy. Where transformation transcends any human capacity for understanding and all feast on the riches of God’s grace.
