With you I will break down an enclosure;
with the help of my God I will scale any wall.
Psalm 18:30
These days my quiet time is graced with the presence of the construction project across the street. The workers arrive early, and my morning meditation includes a background chorus of their voices. Later come the drills, the saws, the beeping of vehicles, and the occasional loud crash which accompany me throughout the day. My view of large trees and a long vista is now accented by bright green safety vests and florescent orange barriers.
The project began in the spring and won’t be completed until next summer, so I have become used to its company. At times I am oblivious to its noise and presence. Other times I acknowledge the workers and the work as part of my day.
Today, as I begin my prayer time, I give the workers my attention. Rather than a distraction, I envision them as companions on my spiritual journey. I do not know their stories; so I do not know which one of them prayed this morning before starting work, or which one has a family member in the hospital, or which one supports the local food bank.
The holy one invites me again and again to re-consider. To reframe barriers and enclosures and disruptions. To look for the expansive grace which encompasses all of creation.
